horticultural help re rhizomes
Both iris and peony "roots" are actually rhizomes, which need to be near the surface. The roots grow deep into the ground from the rhizomes. Other plants with rhizomes that stay near the soil surface are varieties of ferns and lily of the valley. Plants with underground rhizomes include ginger, bamboo, and alstroemeria.
