Re: Need tecnical horticultural help please

It might be useful in this discussion to know that rhizomes are modified stem tissue, while tubers are modified roots and sometimes modified rhizomes. To me, this explains why the two sorts of plants with storage organs are grown differently. Rhizomatous plants sprout roots and shoots individually along their rhizome, while tuberous roots develop eyes that sprout shoots or roots after dormancy from any one eye. Thus, while I don't know the name of the phenom, it makes sense. The emerging stems need sunlight to photosynthesize almost as soon as they come up, so planting depth makes a huge difference in bloomstalk development. Here in the deep south, we nestle bearded iris rhizomes directly in the mulch!

Subject: [GWL] Need tecnical horticultural help please

List sure is quiet...

When iris and peonies are planted too deep, even slightly, they will not
flower. Is anyone aware of why this happens and if there is a technical
term for plants whose roots need to be near the soil surface in order to
initiate flower development?

Thanks
