Re: Perennials low-maintenance, switching to Roses?

Hi Lorraine and everyone,

What an interesting conversation. I also grow Easy Elegance, and I like them
very much. I find that in my garden, they get blackspot about the same as
the Knockouts. I have the Sweet Fragrance and Grandma's Blessing. I like
them both. I do love the shiny foliage on the EE's, and I've featured them
on my blog before. I also like the OSO Easy roses. I have two, and both of
them get a bit of blackspot, but not too much.

Frankly, I love many of Dr. Griffith Buck's roses as much as the new disease
resistant varieties. 'Carefree Beauty' is the best rose in my garden.
'Country Dancer' is another nice one, as is 'Hi Neighbor' and 'Applejack'
which only blooms once a year, but oh does it smell good.

Also, 'Carefree Delight' and 'The Fairy' while not Buck roses work well in
my garden.

I think it depends on where you live. I only mentioned Gail's assertion of
the problems with the Knockouts because I think it represents what can
happen if you plant too much of the same thing. My original pink KO is
great. The double red and pink aren't quite as floriferous, but are also
good. I have the yellow, rainbow, blushing pink double, red double, single
red and single pink. Here, the rainbows are pretty good. I have them
together in one bed. However, once they bloom, the petals bleach to almost
white and are kind of ugly until cut off. I also have Winner's Circle and
Homerun. All are performers. I love the pink singles best by far. They are
very hardy, tough and bloom all summer.

Other roses lose their leaves from blackspot, but later grow them back with
no problems. I'm thinking of 'Old Blush' for example. If a rose can't hack
it here without smelling salts, I dig it up and send it on its way.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm always interested in what works in other parts
of the country.

Dee
