Re: norfolk island pine
I would love to hear from anyone here who has actually rooted cuttings from
Norfolk Island Pines themselves. I have found almost all large conifers,
except cypress & juniper, to be quite tricky at best to root.
As for needing a terminal bud to grow a tall tree....I doubt this is
actually true. If you can root a side branch, yes, it will grow sideways,
prostate, BUT if you stake it upright, it will after a while self-correct
and start growing upright on its own. This has been my experience with, for
example, a great many Podocarpus spp. that I've grown from cuttings.

#1 suggestion: turn the plant.
if you take a branch cutting the new plant will not grow upright. If your
cutting is from the leader, the new plant will be a duplicate.
What if she could re-use the pot for sentimentality and get a fresh new
tree for it? Best, Geri Laufer
