query about 'first garden' stories?

Hello, All

1) could any Canadians on this list please respond to me if they are
interested in sharing some brief personal anecdotes about 'first gardens' -
as in, making big mistakes, fertilizing with fresh hot chicken manure and
killing everything alive, etc....? I would give them a mention in the mag
article I am writing. 

2) are any of our American, British or otherwise friends interested in
sharing any stories? 

I think it should probably be off-list, though I daresay they'd be
hilarious reading. 

My own first vegetable garden was a complete disaster. I hired an old Dutch
farmer with a tractor to plow up 1/2 an acre in Richmond, B.C. Everyone
else had gardens all around me, so I figured it'd be a snap. 

I must have seeded everything including tomatoes and peppers right into the
soil....it was only February but the sun had been out once or
twice.....anyhow, the whole thing hardened into pure clay, and until the
day we moved out, there were permanently fossilized furrows running back
and forth through that 1/2 acre. Nothing came up except a few leeks. I
think maybe my keen interest in gardening began then, when I realized I
knew nothing. And, it says a lot for leeks; they are sure easy to grow!

I want to do what works in this case....I am thinking I'd like to work it
into a mag. article, and later maybe something more ambitious. I hope this
is an appropriate thing to ask on this list.
