Webseed

Dear garden writers:

I have run into a situation on-line that caused me to quickly drop three
different columns last week. Webseed is now proposing charging writers to
publish there. Somehow, this seems really backwards to me. THEY want to
make money from my work but not give me any money in return unless I go out
and sign up with a bunch of affiliate programs (limited to 5 per page) and
put up with their commisioned ads on each page of my site.

I don't know if I am finally undergoing a serious attitude change about
writing or what. Maybe, because I now have a bimonthly book review column
in a print garden magazine, I am starting to see myself as worthy of being
paid.

What is your take on webseed right now? I don't care if the charge is
$25/year or $20/month (both of which are currently proposed). To me, it is
the principle of the thing. If I become a salesman I might make some money
there but they have total control over where the ads are placed. They also
have the courage to post one ad in the middle of our articles to be sure the
reader views them.

I am currently the Bella Gardening Host and the suite101 Enabled Gardener
editor. I also have my own site, which until this coming week, only linked
to the other websites where my writing is posted. If I have to run
affiliate programs to make any money online, I may just as well do it with
my own website (currently costing $32/year for 5 megs space, domain name
registration, and 10 email boxes) and have TOTAL control over what ads are
even placed on my pages.

AM I IN THE WRONG HERE? The overseer of webseed just sent out a newsletter
saying something to the effect that the ones complaining loudest about being
charged are being the harshest in our criticism. I AM SORRY but a part of
me feels like he is USING ME to make money for himself. I totally
understand that everyone needs to make money to keep large communities of
writers running, but there has to be a way where the revenue is shared with
the writer without turning us into salesmen too.

I know I am spouting off a bit here but I thought this would be the
appropriate place to discuss this issue with professional writers.
