Re: Ready for drugs
Hello Nan,
You can train chinese geese to dig them up and eat them. Better yet, get a neighbor kid to start a business bringing in his
geese to weed out the bulbs. Some folks did a similar business in the east SF Bay area with angora goats that they brought in
to graze on customer's poison oak. Then they harvested the wool that brought in a premium price on the market. Weeder geese
are used more and more today for cleaning up grassy weeds in vegies. I can get some more info if you are interested. I have
put together a bunch of info on weeds as indicators of soil condition and put it on our institute web page
http://dietrick.org - it is a work in progress... I have an article on weeder geese there.
Most chemicals don't work cuz they don't translocate to the bulbs. So the chemical route is just keep burning the tops.
Some people will dig up a section infested with oxalis and put all the soil through a screen small enough to catch the bulbs.
They are said to have a nutty flavor and are good raw and lightly roasted.
The red/purple color is phosphorus deficiency brought on by cool temps in the soil, microbes that mobilize phosphorus are
moving slow. Occasionally it is a virus.
Oxalis greens and flowers are great as an accent in salads, and a treat to nibble on as you are gardening. The oxalic acid
that makes it sour is not good in large quantities, so don't make it major part of your diet.
