Thanks and internet involvement with magazines
Thank you to so many of you who took the time to reply to my questions about
the book contract. I have decided to request a fee ($50) for each photograph
and a small token fee ($250) for the writing. The contract already states
that I will be given credit for all the works I supply. I understand that
these fees might not be acceptable but it doesn't hurt to ask.
Regarding the on going discussion on gardening magazines I've noticed a
major change because of the internet. The Daylily Journal (published four
times a year by the American Hemerocallis Society, with a readership of
11,000) has changed drastically due to the internet.
In the past daylily hybridizers were happy to pay a fee to have a color
photograph of their newest introductions plastered across the pages. Today
the fee for a single daylily photograph is enough to pay to have a whole
website designed where one can showcase their whole collection.
The spring issue that just arrived is usually chock full of color, this time
there was only one or two color ads. Instead, the daylily nurseries are
placing smaller black and white ads which list their web address. I imaging
the loss of income from these adds will greatly affect the AHS and I have to
speculate that it's the same for many other publications.
