RE: another garden magazine ceases
Nancy and I had a bit of a disagreement last night chatting about the
original notice of the demise of two mags. I was bemoaning the fact that in
my opinion there were only three gardening mags left - Garden Gate for
beginners, Horticulture for the middle, and Fine Gardening for the high end.
Yes, I admitted there are some fine regional mags, Chicagoland Gardening and
GreenScene being just two of many. But Nancy's retort was that there were
lots of gardening magazines. They just don't look the same. She started to
list Better Homes & G, Southern Living, Martha, Country Living Gardens, etc.
Her position being that the country has come to prefer sound bite
information packets, whether we writers like it or not. She maintains that
these broader scale style and living types all contain some really good
gardening info, albeit short and choppy. I hate to admit it, but I think
she is right, at least for the average home owner and beginning gardener.
On the other hand, I must note that the serious gardeners have their
specialty mags from the societies and associations. Maybe the reason I'm
not terribly happy about the situation is that I guess there are less
options for free lance writers to make some money, however modest. That's
what I miss.
