Jeff,
You forgot some good ones such as The American Gardener and Pacific
Horticulture and more I could name later. But there are excellent articles in
non-gardening magazines that we don't ordinarily consider because they are
out of our normal range. Just the other day I came across exactly what I was
looking for, in terms of content and depth, in Atlantic Monthly. Why it was
not published in a garden magazine, I don't know. But bringing these types of
articles to the attention of readers of garden literature was my goal with my
index Garden Literature.
For the first 3 years, 1992-1994, I covered more than 100 periodicals and
newspapers and up to 170 one reviewer said (I never did count them all), and
it was a great service. Unfortunately, not enough libraries agreed or were
willing to pay $75 (a bargain I thought) for it. What is telling about the
need for access, though, is that when I shrank this down to a measly 13
titles (you do the percentage), most of the libraries stuck with me.
