periodicals of interest

In addition to the magazines already mentioned, for design I find Garden
Design and Landscape Architecture useful. It's interesting that my British
friends prefer Garden Design (U.S.) to their Gardens Illustrated (U.K.),
while Americans seem to go ga-ga over Gardens Illustrated.

The Garden (RHS) is by far the best-researched and articulate "popular"
garden magazine (which excludes the more "advanced" The Plantsman) that I
know of. I can't think of a North American equivalent, even when combining
The American Gardener, Fine Gardening, Garden Design, and Horticulture
together. It's not as practical for my zone 4 garden (for that I have People
Places Plants, a New England regional, and now there's a second one for the
Mid-Atlantic). For the pure joy of reading, I go to Hortus.

But the one I really appreciate is HortIdeas, a black and white, text only
monthly newsletter that reports on "the latest research, methods, tools,
plants, books, etc. for vegetable, fruit, and flower gardeners, gathered from
hundreds of popular and technical sources, worldwide." Owner/editors Greg and
Pat Williams also do a column in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Plants and
Gardens News.
