You might start with the American Horticultural Society's list of 75 great
American books published in the last 75 years (celebrating their 75th
anniversary), article published in The American Gardener vol. 76 No. 5,
Sept/Oct 1997, p6+.
You might also be interested in my article in Brooklyn Botanic Garden's
Handbook, Essential Tools, no. 170, 2002, p83+. Titled Tools for the Mind:
Books and more for gardeners, it discusses how to fill an information "tool
box" beginning with resources that help find resources. It includes garden
history and resources for visiting gardens, areas that are sometimes
neglected in our focus on plants.
