In my opinion, just about everything that goes out under the Ortho colophon is good. Except perhaps their book on houseplants. There is no good book on houseplants. None.

Though I live about as far away as you can get from the west coast (and you can believe I am thankful for that), my favorite book on houseplants has been The Sunset Western Garden Book. I know. It isn't a houseplant book, but things California people grow in their yards we grow in our windows. And the Sunset zone system, which in other contexts drives me crazy, does in fact give some useful insight into conditions particular houseplants want.

Three or four years ago Sunset came out with the National Garden Book without telling me. And for some reason it didn't work for them. I found out about it by seeing a pallet of them at Waldens for five bucks a pop. I bought one, took it home, and went back and bought ten copies. I have recommended to my readers that if they have only one book on gardening, this should be it. Even at full price, which seemed to be fungible, it was a good book.

I understand they have replaced it with regional editions, including Northeast, but I haven't seen them. And I tried to talk them into doing a houseplant book in the same format, but no one listens to me. Probably with good reason.
