Re: George Ball's NYT op-ed article
I've noticed that most invasives do not do spread nearly as much (if at all)
in intact ecosystems. Pampas grass and ragweed for example, the worse the
ecosystem, the more common they are, and I see much the same thing here in
California with Scotch Broom.
Still, I have walked through woods in Arkansas where all the undergrowth
seemed to be Ajuga repens and Halls Honeysuckle. Yet here in the west I've
yet to personally see much of either of these species in the wild. What can
become invasive in one part of the US, is often anything but in another. In
Florida, for another example, I see Schinus terebinthifolius (spelling?),
Brazilian Pepper trees, all over in damaged ecosystems, but in CA, even
though the trees are all too common in the landscapes, I don't see them
going native. Invasive lists to mean anything real, ought not to be national
in scope.

ps. Am about to leave town, tomorrow, driving, headed east to give some
April talks at the USBG & at the Brooklyn BG. Any GWA folks who might be on
my route and who'd like to share a cup of coffee please do drop me an email.
