I dusted each small bulb with mycorrhizal fungi inoculant when I planted it. 
Mycorrhizae makes a huge difference in a plant's ability to suck nutrients 
out of the soil and store carbohydrates, which are the basic building blocks 
of the bulb.  Hmmm....dead vagrants?  There's an idea.  Better than shredded 
greenbacks, for sure.
