I am in a similar but different situation. Some of my papers are in a group
that filed Chapter 11. Payments that have been regular as clockwork for
years are now erratic and falling behind. For a number of reasons, I'm just
letting it slide.
1. It's the parent company that is having problems, not the papers with whom
I have had a great relationship for over two decades. I'm not going to add
to the tsuriss of people who a) didn't cause the problem, b) can't do much
about it, and c) are doubtless being bugged by many others.
2. To be honest, it doesn't cost me anything to keep sending the column. It
goes out anyway, and they are just one email address on the list. But I
think that even if it were an exclusive article, I'd do it. It's not as if
I'm giving them something that I would have to pay money to replace. The
choices would be either MAYBE no payment or DEFIINATELY no payment.
3. I feel an obligation to a long time and loyal fan base. Or less high
minded, I'd hate to let the papers learn they can get along without me.
So I keep sending the column. I MIGHT take a loss, probably just a partial
loss, but I KNOW I'll lose money if I don't send it. When -- and if -- they
get back on track, I'll still be there. If there is a gap in a weekly
reading habit, I'm not sure I would be.
So I say: Give 'em a break.
