Columbine Question

HThis is for the Horticulturists among us.

Several years ago, I pulled out a purple columbine that had always grown
in the shade alongside the driveway (for at least 60 years). It was never
very strong and I moved it to the back yard to save it from destruction.
I always believed this to be a sport of the wild columbine growing
nearby, since there were no plants like this growing anywhere near me. My
parents never planted flowers, so I know they didn't put it there -- it
was in a most unlikely spot to have been a cultivated plant.

Over the past few years, this plant has grown into a huge mass, in a
half-sunny spot and is extremely floriferous. Does anyone know whether
this is another type of wild columbine? What have I got? I tried to start
seeds, but only got one to sprout. Meanwhile, the hybrid seeds have been
very fertile.

Any ideas?

Regards,
Lois
