Re: Indexing

I'd like to second everything that Carol wrote. I took the U of Md indexng
course some years ago and then put it aside. Last year, I had to revisit
everything I had learned because I was given the opportunity to index a book
I had edited for McGill University Press. I was so thankful to have taken
the course all those years earlier because otherwise, it would have taken me
forever to do the job and I doubt I would have done an adequate job. I
approached the task with some trepidation, but ended up thoroughly enjoying
the challenge of producing a comprehensive index within the allotted pages.
And yes, I did have to put everything else aside for a week (450 dense pages
in the book) to meet the deadline. My spices aren't alphabetized,
incidentally, but I do like puzzles--it felt like a giant puzzle while I was
doing it.
