Re: Indexing

Hi all,
I looked into indexing at one point, thinking it might make a good
winter job. I had done it decades ago, (with real index cards). I even
joined the indexers list for a while. As it turned out, an indexer has
no control over timing; you meet the proposed deadline or don't take
the job. It also seems that there's a certain personality type. If
your spice cabinet is alphabetized, you're suitable. You have to
imagine the different ways a reader might search for information and
set up keywords. There are commercial indexing software applications
(not cheap) and several different styles. Then you have to cut the
whole thing down to fit the allotted space. Indexes cost money, like
everything else, and are frequently downsized to meet printing
requirements.
A valuable service, certainly. The people who do it didn't seem to
limit themselves to a single topic such as gardening, although I guess
if there was enough demand for some very technical subject they might.
