I've called Sanseveria snake plant and thought it's best use was as ground 
cover in southern Florida.  Cannabis sativa is called hemp, but maybe other 
plants are as well.  I rely on synthetic fiber ropes and string when I need 
durability and any natural fiber available at low cost when I'm deliberately 
seeking temporary restraint.

I'll see if I can find anything in the reference books.
