Jane is right. Rochester NY is a hotbed of horticultural activity. It was
my pleasure to be a speaker at Gardenscape 2001 last year in Rochester.
This garden show had more exhibits than the Chicago Flower Show, where I had
been the previous week, and the exhibits were of impressive scale--sizewise
and in complexity. The county extension agent (whose name escapes me) took
me around to the parks and botanical sites in the snows of February. Even
with about 2 feet of the stuff on the ground, it was easy to see the bones
of some terrific gardens. I also met people deeply involved with dwarf
conifers, hardy perennials and more. Rochester gardeners are a passionate
lot. I agreed to be a speaker, because Roger Swain and Jim Wilson both
recommended the show and the area. They both had been speakers and frequent
visitors to the area. Jim said that Rochester is a gem that serious
gardeners shouldn't miss.
