This reply is a little bit from personal experience and mostly off the point 
of my head.  When I want an opinion about nurseries I know enough people who 
buy enough plant material each year to shed some light on sources within 150 
miles or so.  I can also ask the few pesticide applicators I know what their 
opinion is of such products, and I can also ask people in the Extension 
Service if they have any impartial data on pesticides.  In other words I do 
some research.  It seems to me that to do otherwise is letting down the 
reader and appointing oneself oracle or something.
