Lon,
My feeling is that if you, as an expert in your book's subject recommend a source, you should have proven to your own satisfaction that it is, indeed a good source. You simply can't take it for granted that a source is good without checking it personally or without at the very least consulting with several people who have used that source in the recent past. It's too risky doing otherwise.
Remember -- you're the expert. It's *your* reputation as a researcher and writer that's at stake here. My advice -- take the extra time and double check all sources!
