unemployment
Some of you may have seen that Oregon (where I live) ranks number one in
unemployment. That's a distorted ranking (and a rank distortion), as far as
I'm concerned. The biggest part of the unemployment is in the population
dense (and the densest people, in more ways than one) Portland area where
all the high tech stuff is. In the area where I am, there is an extremely
large number of wholesale nurseries and I've seen more new plantings this
spring than in many years. At least two places are renovating and expanding
their holding yards. A big new direct to the public nursery has opened up
right along I-5 just a couple of miles from me.
It looks more like they are gearing up for big sales now, and next
winter and spring. I suspect the big sales this year are going to be to
areas hit by cold that lost a lot of plants and need replacements.
In short, nothing I've seen in the nursery industry shows any sort of
recession HERE.
