Roof Gardening

Jane,

I designed a roof garden for some folks in Atlanta last year, and the best
resource I found (aside from materials on the web that others have
mentioned), is the book by Theodore Osmundson "Roof Gardens: History,
Design, and Construction." It's not cheap ($75 list price, though look for
used on Amazon or Powell's websites), but it has tables on figuring load,
designing for proper drainage, etc. The focus of the book is complete
gardens on building rooftops, but for anything more than a few containers on
a deck, the issues will apply. And those issues are serious. I had a
friend whose designer installed large ceramic pots on the edges of her deck
in California, and after a year, the whole deck gave way. It was a
combination of sandy soil and the additional load of pots and sculpture.
