Re: Most Frequent Questions

Doreen,

Southern California gardeners are lazy gardeners. Everything grows well, and the seasons, while they're there, are indistinguishable to the novice gardener. If it's green, it's a garden.

I find the most frequently asked question is "What can I grow that takes no water, no fertilizer, no weeding, blooms all year and every year." It's the same question the ladies in the customer service unit said was the most frequent in the years I worked for Burpee.

But for Southern Californria gardeners about the most pertinent question I'm asked from my newspaper column or from garden talks refers to the "when" of planting. Pansies seeded in late August through November, marigolds seeded from February through July seems to exemplify the biggest puzzle to gardeners here. And because nurseries or the big box garden centers usually lack experienced people on staff gardeners are thrown for a loop when they find left-over marigolds in six packs in the nursery in November, plant them, only to find they fade miserably as the days shorten.
