I wrote a Q&A garden column for the DC paper for 10 years based on an hour-long weekly call in radio show ...a large percentage of the questions were predictable...seasonal. What to do with the amaryllis now that it is out of bloom.. how to prune azaleas...what to do with the potted Easter lily, azalea, calla lily whatever ..keeping squirrels from digging the tulips etc...cats and dogs in the garden... Once suggested a cat was a good way to keep squirrels away and suffered a 2-month attack from squirrel animal lovers including vitriolic phone calls and letters to the editor and to me from a woman running a campaign ... her anguish was a book she read, she said, about a cat tearing a squirrel apart... meanwhile, my 2 dear pussycat pussycats would run like idiots after the squirrels digging up my bulbs and just planted annuals always ending up sitting patiently for hours at the base of one of the trees the squirrels had climbed and long gone from. Moral: always be aware and beware of uninformed but passionate environmentalists. Jacqueline Heriteau
