New Book
I want to let everyone know that my new book, UNCOMMON FRUITS FOR EVERY GARDEN,
is now out from Timber Press. This book is a sequel to my first book, with new
information, some new fruits, updated nursery sources, and color photos. As
previously, to be included in the book, a fruit must be able to tolerate winter
cold, be uncommon, and -- most important -- be good for fresh eating. These
fruits are generally pest resistant, so are good for organic growing and
sustainable systems, and many are excellent ornamentals, so are also good for
"edible landscaping."
Each chapter includes something of the history of each plant, a description of
the plant and the fruit, and details about cultivation, propagation, and
harvest followed by cultivar lists and descriptions. The fruits included are
Juneberry, Beach Plum, Alpine and Musk Strawberries, Pawpaw, Raisin Tree,
Lingonberry, Actinidia, Mulberry, Kaki and American Persimmons, Elaeagnus,
Gooseberry, Maypop, Che, Black Currant, Nanking Cherry, Cornelian Cherry, Asian
Pear, Jostaberry, Lowbush Blueberry, Jujube, Shipova, and Medlar.
I am more enthusiastic than ever about these fruits grow just about all of them
in my Zone 5 garden. (My garden is too cold for jujube and large kiwifruit.) As
I state in my introduction, "Novice gardeners will especially appreciate the
ease with which these plants can be grown . . . Garden mavens will grow these
plants to round out their larders with delicacies as yet unavailable in the
markets. Savvy orchardists will see the market potential in these wonderful
fruits."
Anyone who is interested in obtaining a copy of the book to write a review
should contact Rebecca Ragain at Timber Press (1-800-327-5680 x 110,
