RE: Yardeners

Webster's unabridged defines "gardener" as "one who makes or works in a garden. Somehow slick magazines and garden writers (many of whom do not themselves garden) have put "gardeners" on some sort of lofty pedestal, unattainable to common people who work away from their homes most daylight hours. I've had many people say "I'm not a gardener, but I read your column..." I ask if they plant seeds or plants or tend plants. If they answer yes, I tell them they are a gardener. I don't know of any eminence who dubs this one a gardener and that one not. Yes, they do spend a lot of money on plants they don't know a thing about. Some of them grow circles around experienced gardeners who cringe at their planting in the "wrong" location.


 Jeff Ball writes: "I am firmly convinced that if we can find a
way to truly communicate to that huge market of yardeners, they will spend
more money because they will have some confidence that they know what
they are buying and why"

If we can find a way??? We already have several ways!
I am firmly convinced that many of us are speaking to home landscapers all the time, and THEY ARE LISTENING!
They are buying the plants and products we recommend. Even though they are not "gardeners", they are engaged with
their landscapes and they value our advice.
