Julie,

I don't work directly with the Doug and the other folks at BHG, but I can tell you that the way they produce stories is a little more complicated than most.

If you're not satisfied with BHG, have you any interest in sending the garden to the gardening SIP titles (such as Garden Ideas and Outdoor Living; Garden, Deck, and Landscape; Country Gardens, Garden Rooms; Perennials; Garden Shed, etc.)? It has a much better chance of being published by one of the SIP titles (simply because of the numbers alone; we produce more than 25 issues a year (each with more than 100 pages of gardening content) a year. Compare that to BHG, which has 12 issues a year and 12 or less pages of gardening content an issue. If you'd like more info about this, please let me know (offlist).

We also sometimes have the scouts write the story, but in most cases, our scouts aren't writers. (Most of BHG's scouts aren't writers, either, which makes Doug's comment all the more true.)

The SIP titles are always looking for gardens to consider; if any of you are interested in working as location finders for us, please drop me a note!

By the way: The new (summer 2004) issue of my magazine, Garden Doctor, should hit newsstands about 1 June, 2004. This is a new title that we just launched in autumn 2003. If anyone picks it up, I'd love to hear your comments on it. E-mail me offlist at Justin.Hancock@Meredith.com

I sent an e-query plus scout photos to Doug Hall at Better Homes last week regarding an unusual, very photogenic garden in Southern California.  He replied the next day that they have a "convoluted" way of producing articles there, and that the scout for an article rarely writes it.  I doubt the owner of this garden would be comfortable with anyone else writing the article (she's the wife of a Hollywood actor--but doesn't want that part played up, which I haven't in another article I did for a regional).  I just wanted to know what kind of experience other GWAA members have had with BHG.  I haven't written for them before.  I did mention in my query my numerous garden writing credentials, including my lastest book Readers's Digest Flower Gardening.  Thanks for any input,

Julie Bawden Davis
