Re: Garden Columns Cut & Rates
I agree with Jane B - the best writing exercise I ever had was when I wrote for, and recorded, a two minute piece for "The Cultivated Gardener" on NPR. I would have a different subject every week: compost, pruning, planting annuals, houseplant problems etc. I'd have to introduce the piece in a personal and entertaining way, tell people what they needed to know about the topic and wrap it all up in two minutes. Two minutes is about 340 words. Doing a new piece every week taught me how many extra words we all use, both when writing and speaking. It also taught me that there is ALWAYS another, shorter way to say it. I disagree that you'll have to strip the personal from your pieces - you just have to craft it more carefully.
