Email lists and marketers
Doug I think your point about the danger of being labeled a spammer bears
repeating. Few people realize that it only takes a very few spam
complaints?real or imagined?to get yourself blacklisted as a spammer by the
ISP¹s. So then your emails aren¹t getting to your readers, and you probably
won¹t even know about it until you get a nasty note from one of them. It¹s
completely unfair, and along with vitriol spouted by the ungrateful readers
of your free content, being cast in the same light as the evil snake oil
salesmen who really are spammers is like a kick in the gut.
My husband is the IT guy for a very small publisher, and has managed their
30-50K+ mailing list for 10 years. They have taken great pains to get
double-opt-in names for their mailings, but there are always people who
can¹t remember they signed up, or get too lazy to use the unsub process.
Unfortunately, they can make online life a bit bumpy.
