Re: planting out dates?
Here in Eastern Massachusetts spring is early. Plants are two weeks ahead of schedule. In the garden centers, people have been asking for tomatoes and impatiens since May 1st. Our traditional planting time for such things is Memorial day, although for the past six to eight years people have gotten away with planting in mid-May, although often the plants just sulk until June. In this area it isn't frost that's a problem, but cold soil and night temperatures below 50. That's my mantra to my GardenLine listeners: "Wait until the night temperatures are reliably above 50, because tomatoes, basil, impatiens and the like don't do well when the nights are cold."
A look at the ten day forecast confirms that we're ahead of schedule on night temps as well. Normally we don't have a spring in this coastal region - this year we're all rejoicing!

Because of our early spring in NY our official growing season started two
weeks earlier than last year according to the NWS. In our zone 5 area the
lettuce, beets, mache, spinach and radishes are definitely ahead of previous
years but my hostas that are not under the canopy of lilac foliage got
toasted last week by below freezing temps two nights in a row as did four
hydrangeas that are out in the open. Our apple trees here and in Westchester
have long since finished blooming but just a mile up the street which is
1000 feet higher in altitude they haven't bloomed yet and the top of the
mountain is leafless with pathches of snow. Meanwhile..out in Southampton
where
we have a maritime climate that's not a subject to the changes in air
masses as the water tempers even the coldest of cold fronts everything seems to
be right on time.
Sooooo...my zone 7 is right on time, my zone 6 is two weeks early and my
zone 5 is as unpredictable as always.

Just curious. The traditional planting date for going outdoors in

folks have such late planting out dates?
