Re: Two questions

Hi Duane,

We've had a lot of winter kill in NWNJ (Zone 5B). A $350 Norway Spruce I planted last year to replace hurricane damage is on its last legs, but my older White Spruces seem fine. Lots of damage on Rhodies and Azaleas, as well as Hollies (Prince and Princess). Some of these plants are on a berm and would have been exposed to strong winds and bright sun while covered in ice or snow.

Our glacial cover lasted into March. Knock-Out Roses are slow coming back; climbers are doing great. I had two PA-bred primroses that were only guaranteed hardy to Zone 6. One survived and one didn't. Otherwise, perennials seem fine. Given the severity of the weather, not so bad, but I'm really upset about the Norway Spruce -- it was a lovely specimen and looked perfect in its spot.

Folks around here with boxwood have plants with mostly white or brown foliage.

Cordially,
Lois

Subject: [GWL] Two questions

Did anyone lose plants during this harsh winter that had survived for years in their gardens? It might be useful to assemble a list. Most surprisingly, I lost several 20 year old colonies of sempervivums. Also most of the Euphorbia myrsinites, some sedums, oriental poppy, one buddlea (maybe).
