Too soon to know exactly what we lost in the zone 5 gardens. In zone 6 some English boxwood and while not a loss 9 foot tall Rhodies browsed by deer from the ground to about 4 feet so they look half naked. In zone 7 plenty of dieback on hydrangeas and those that flower on old wood will skip this year. Where there was ample snow cover there were few losses. I'm also reminding readers that we had a very hot and dry summer last year and not to automatically write off everything to the winter. I think that with the stress of the two unseasonable seasons older trees and shrubs may have given in to the double whammy.

Subject: [GWL] Two questions
Did anyone lose plants during this harsh winter that had survived for years in
their gardens? It might be useful to assemble a list. Most surprisingly, I lost
several 20 year old colonies of sempervivums. Also most of the Euphorbia
myrsinites, some sedums, oriental poppy, one buddlea (maybe).
Second question. Does anyone know why boxwood cuttings donât compost? If I throw
my hedge clippings in the compost pile, and even if I cut them up they are still
there a year later when I harvest the compost.
