Re: Two questions

Hi, Duane et al!

Still waiting for final count of losses. Worst winter in over 20 years of gardening in zone 5b. Severe winterburn/winterkill on euonymus 'green and gold' (2 specimens), Ilex 'Blue Princess', many rhodies . Completely lost Rosa 'Julia Child', all lavender 'Grosso' had to be yanked (about 14 plants). They were so severely impacted that no amount of clipping, shearing, shaping could restore them to any acceptable form. Knockout roses look awful -- had to take them down to about 18" but am hopeful they will recover based on their genes. Side of Juniper 'Gold Cone' exposed to north winds completely brown from constant desiccating winds and ice. Endless Summer hydrangeas are still bare branches. Tip dieback of many Japanese maples very severe -- have been pruning them back to live wood more than any other spring. Might lose one of 3 'shainas' which is tiny to start with.

Will know more in about 2 weeks once I see if buddleias, hibiscus, + perennials emerge. Season is 2-3 weeks late this year.

  Subject: [GWL] Two questions

Did anyone lose plants during this harsh winter that had survived for years in their gardens? It might be useful to assemble a list. Most surprisingly, I lost several 20 year old colonies of sempervivums. Also most of the Euphorbia myrsinites, some sedums, oriental poppy, one buddlea (maybe).

Second question. Does anyone know why boxwood cuttings donât compost? If I throw my hedge clippings in the compost pile, and even if I cut them up they are still there a year later when I harvest the compost.
