Re: A Rant or a Post?

 Re vinegar recipes.

My tests show that household vinegar at 3% acetic acid is essentially useless as a weedkiller unless you're after very tender seedlings and even then it may be the salt/oil in the recipe that's doing the killing.

I don't get a good kill until i get up to the 10% household cleaner vinegar although you can get a lesser kill with the 7% pickling vinegar. I have a source for 20% acetic acid and that stuff burns the ***** out of plants. Note the stronger vinegars will also "corrode" the sprayer if left sitting over the winter - and the vegetable oil can solidify in cooler temperatures to clog nozzles.

I use a dash of soap as a surfactant and a few tablespoons of the cheapest vegetable oil per gallon of vinegar.

The oil does seem to add to the kill rate.

The salt didn't help my kill one way or the other - I no longer use it.

All tests were done on dandelion, Scotch thistle, Aegopodium, and Potentilla neumanniana Nana along with an assortment of seedlings that happened to get in the way.
