Lon: I agree with you about propagation. We also grow a many of our own
plants and divide them, because it's satisfying, educational and you can't
go out everyday and buy 50 of this and 50 of that if you're doing mass
plantings as are we are. The ornamental grasses I love are expensive, and so
I tend to buy of few of them and then get dividing. If it takes me a couple
of years to fill a large bed, so be it. And you are right, many of the
plants we want aren't readily found in the trade, so growing your own is the
way to go.
Part of being cheap, I suppose, is the lot of the freelance writer. Fees
paid by national magazines in Canada were $1/wd 15 years ago (for
experienced people, beginners usually get less and some magazine fees are
considerably lower) and they haven't increased a cent since I started
freelancing in 1988.
