I don't call that being cheap. I call that being prudent. My husband is probably cheaper than I
am - but he has no patience (he's not a real gardener) and so always wants the biggest plant
possible. I on the other hand am willing to buy small ones and wait, or buy large ones and divide
them and wait. He would have one bed of instantly mature plants for the money with which I fill
five beds.
Avid gardeners who have great trouble resisting new plants are prudent - that helps them to
budget to include those love at first sight things and to feed their habit. That's not being
cheap.
Curb appeal gardeners spend once and don't worry about budgeting for more - they aren't all that
interested. They may look more extravagant when you look at their nursery carts but they probably
spend far less than the avid gardeners.
