[GWL]: Odd letter

I just had an occurance so odd I thought I'd ask the list if it had ever
happened to anyone else.
I use a PowerMac with OS 8.5 with Outlook Express for Mac as my e-mail
reader. I went to download my mail this morning and after one letter came
in, a second started, then the OE quit and gave a message of "Error, Type
2". Every time I restarted and tried to download, the operation quit and
gave the same message. Nothing worked at this end, so I called my ISP and
they said the first item in the mailbox was an odd piece of junk mail. Once
they deleted it, my OE stopped crashing.
Point is, I've gotten letters that would cause trouble after I
downloaded them, but this was the first time I've even heard of something
that caused the operation to crash in the middle of downloading. Has anyone
else had this happen?
