Besides my weekly newspaper column, which is not illustrated, I have written
a monthly article for a regional magazine for the last dozen years. At first
they did the art, but a few years ago I provided some photos. I was appalled
to learn that they paid more for a few pics than for the story. Since then,
of course, I provide photos with every article.
And I hate it. It's like the television news axiom: If there isn't video, it
isn't news. I work in words, and now I am concentrated on what I can
illustrate. That just wipes out many important subjects that don't lend
themselves to flashy photography. So to answer your question, Yes, the
photos do drive the content. Fortunately I have the newspaper column where I
can talk about what is important.
