Re: The Scare Crow for deer
I've had some positive results from the scarecrow but not as much as I
need. Covering beds with bird netting seems to work moderately well
as long as I allow plenty of slack for the plants growth. Looks
pretty silly when a tomato plant is trying to break through. We had a
terrible problem with rabbits at the nursery this year, enough to mess
up some of our early trials. The new granular Plantskydd did a good
job. I like it for food crops because I don't have to apply it to any
of the food parts of the plant.
What gets me is I grew up at the nursery, never saw deer or rabbits my
entire childhood. The rabbits are new and I think someone dropped of
their children's darling overgrown bun-buns, thinking there would be
plenty for them to eat. We see some odd looking rabbits but the
granules and an increased gopher snake population eventually got it
under control.
Here in Western Oregon there now is very little hunting and the deer
population is at an historical high living off, home gardens, orchards
and vineyards. The nursery is one issue, but our home is in town and
the deer are worse there than at the nursery. rant, rant.
