Nan,

I highly recommend Soul of the Soil by Grace Gershuny and Joe Smillie. It
will give an overview of the major organic soil supplements as well as
explaining the composting process.

The book explains in very understandable terms, why feeding the soil is
better than feeding the plant. Lots of great graphs and references to
research work.
