Re: [GWL]: Recommending plant sources

When the plant material is uncommon and only available from a few
sources, finding more than one supplier can also be a problem.

Over the years my policy has been to personally acquire plant material
from direct mail suppliers and only recommending those that I have have
positives experiences.

There are many smaller companies that are using the internet to market
plant materials so that my limited space and funds make it impossible to
obtain personal knowledge of these suppliers.

I have found that plant societies organized around a specific plant
(clivia, plumeria, begonia, etc.) will frequently have individuals who
have developed a small business enterprise to allow them to produce a
profit or a loss associated with their activities.

Such small scale business operations may have very elaborate web sites
and/or publish color catalogs, but they seem to wait until they receive
an order to propagate the plant material. The result is substantial
delays in delivery. Combined with poor customer communications, the
customer becomes extremely unhappy. They generally will write a nasty
letter to the editor in which your article was published.

It would be very helpful for our list to share positive and negative
experiences with mail order suppliers so we don't recommend a company
that can't handle orders resulting from our listing them as a source.
