[GWL]: victory gardens

Writers may want to expand on the Victory Garden research idea. Chances are
good every community in the country has at least a few WWII-era VG pros
who'd jump at the chance to talk about it. In January, I wrote a column
about Victory Gardens after a colleague unearthed, at a yard sale, a VG's
garden scrapbook from the 1940s. What a time capsule! That column generated
more response than any other I've written (except the one on the
ever-popular armadillo). People called, wrote and e-mailed, one from 3,000
miles away, simply to share their VG experiences and to say thanks for
making them think about those gardens again. Local media outlets should be
very receptive to this kind of story.

Gerri Bauer, Daytona Beach News-Journal

P.S. On a much more somber note, I speculated in that column how I, born 10
years after WWII ended, couldn't imagine anything that would unite 21st
century Americans the way Pearl Harbor/WWII pulled together Americans in
the 1940s. I wish I were still wondering.

P.P.S. That garden journal mentioned in the column came from Rochester,
N.Y. If anybody on this list is from there, and wants to pursue the lead
for a local story (maybe the gardener is still alive; if not, descendants
may be interested in the story; family name is Thompson), contact me
off-list, gerri.bauer@news-jrnl.com.
