You can add to that my book, Perennials for Every Purpose (Rodale Press, 2000). I find the heat zones of zero use... in cooler climates, but of great importance from about zone 7-8 South. They help explain a lot of plant failures in the South.
By the way, the reason you won't be seeing them used that much for a long time is that... the AHS charges publishers for their use. My publisher (who, thank heavens, always fact checks everything) asked the AHS for heat zones for many plants I had no heat zone rating for and had to pay to get the information. Now they will no longer let me use them: it apparently costs too much!
Just thought you'd like to know!
