I agree. I don't want them to go out of business either, especially the
people on this list who have posted on this topic and both of whom have
superior seeds and in the case of Richter's, plants.

I neglected to mention in my previous post re irradiation and damage to
seeds that my father, who always wore protective gear and took all necessary
precautions, died at the age of 46 from leukemia. He was so careful that he
wouldn't let us get our feet X-rayed in the machines they once had in shoe
stores to make sure your shoes fit. Consequently, I don't take irradiation
lightly.

I also thought about it a bit and realized that the dose that postal
authorities are likely to be administering is much stronger than that used
to create mutations. To produce mutations, the dose given is only slightly
higher than background radiation; it wouldn't kill bacteria.

The civil liberties question is very worrisome, especially if you see no
guarantee that the legislation in question will be rescinded once this
crisis has passed. For one thing, this is a crisis that may not pass for
many many years. Isreal has not had a break and I suspect we won't either.
So I'm all for a more careful approach to enacting laws that may very well
create what amounts to a police state. I was harrassed during the FLQ thing
simply because I had a record of working with the civil rights movement in
this country. That sort of thing is common and no one cares in the least
whether you are innocent. Instead, they care about rounding up all people
who could possibly be implicated. You pay the devil --and a few lawyers-- to
establish your innocence. By the time that you have done that, it's likely
that your life has been severely disrupted. So I'm with Doug--even garden
writers can exert influence and it will be interesting to see what we all
do. I still like the transparent containers too.
