Certainly having an expertise in what you write is important. However, any reputable newspaper or, I would hope, magazine follow basic journalism principles, which include the vigorous avoidance or even the appearance of conflict of interest.

Just a minute there. I am a gardener as well as a garden writer. I
started out writing poems, went to journalism and then through Suite101
decided that garden writing (which was my hobby) was a great way to go.
:)
I was gardening long before I started writing on it and while I don't
know everything there is to know I do know when a plant performs well.
I can comment on how it was shipped, comment on my feelings about the
plant and I've certainly grown enough plants to say when one performs
well.
I also know a dab about pests, etc. If I don't know I do consult
another source. I also moderate two groups on tropical plants (one on
Yahoo and the other on MSN) so I do have people to compare too. Asking
the grower or other local gardeners is always good, but first hand
experience is better.
I am currently testing some zone 6 plants in my zone 5 garden for one
company. We'll see if they make it or not. If they do, that opens up
an entire extra xone for them to sell their plants too.
I also do travel writing and yes, I accept press trips. No, it doesn't
bias my opinion. It allows me to do things, like the Chelsea Flower
Show, that I couldn't afford otherwise. It also allows me to tell
others what I think so they can decide if it's worth their time and
money or not.
Just my 2 cents!
Sheri :)
