I've been following this discussion with interest, partially because although I've never considered myself a photographer I've often been asked to supply photos with my magazine articles. Fortunately they have all been happy with high resolution digital photos, since that's the only kind of camera I have.
But I am writing a book - and the publisher expects me to supply the photos for that and wants slides. The advance will not cover a new camera and photography lessons. As with so many advances today it is small and doesn't even pay for my time. So how am I supposed to come up with 100 high resolution, high quality slides? Especially at the prices you are quoting?
My first instinct was to go to catalogs with good photos of the plants I need and yes - to trade them recognition and a mention in my index of sources. That's all I can afford. Now I see everyone here frowning on that.
I am trying to grow as many of the plants I need photos of in my own yard as possible and hoping to somehow get a local photographer to help me out. But getting the 100 or so photos they want will be a scramble. Too many "black" plants are tropicals that I can't provide adequate conditions for.
I'm not whining here - just stating my dilemma on the other side of the coin. Not as a parsimonious publisher but as a penniless author. As you talk of photographers and their woes - how about a word on the other side for the authors who have small advances and yet need to provide quality photography? Any ideas for the likes of us?
