Re: Photographers, editors and writers
An issue near and dear to my heart. If the publisher expects you do to
the photography, and if you need to have the expenses of that
photography covered (because: a) you actually work for a living, b) have
not received a large grant, c) are foolishly obsessive about your topic
and must publish at any cost), then you should either ask for a larger
advance, or ask that a photo allowance be added to the budget as an
expense rather than as a fee against royalties.
Some publishers expect you to be responsible for the photography, others
do not. I consider myself primarily an author (with photographic
skills) and I prefer to supply my own images. However, I would not
agree to provide them if it actually costs me money.
People will try to get away with as much as you let them. So don't let
them.
